Atelier Circulaire is pleased to invite you to an online conversation with Sarah Pupo on Thursday, April 1, 2021, at 6 pm.
Following a one-month residency at Atelier Circulaire, Sarah Pupo will present her photoengraving project based on an animation entitled "Burning through the body". This film, created in collaboration with the Icelandic poet Kristin Eiriksdottir, is composed of a succession of abstract images that reveal a liminal space between a desire for narrativity and a loss to reverie.
In separating, cutting and reworking seven frames from the film, Sarah Pupo has undertaken a process of slowing down time and rematerializing digital images. During this presentation, the artist will explain how she explored photoengraving as a way to give a tangible character to ephemeral residual images.
Sarah Pupo lives and works in Montréal, Quebec. Her practice bridges watercolour painting, drawing, provisional installation, and lo-fi animation. Choosing materials and processes that prioritize intuition, associative thinking and the flux of chance and control, she works to undermine the hierarchies that privilege a rational, linear approach over subtler logics that are more difficult to articulate and are often feminized and devalued as a result. Her approach to abstraction foregrounds materiality, process and the development of a personal lexicon.
In 2020 Pupo was a resident at the British School in Rome. She has recently exhibited at Trinity Square Video and Art Metropole (Toronto, ON) and has an upcoming show at YYZ.
