"100 Faces and Friends"
TOMIYUKI SAKUTA
February 23 to April 1, 2017
For this exhibition, Tomiyuki Sakuta presents a multitude of small formats forming a phantasmagoric world populated by more than a hundred faces. The artist describes his approach as follows:
"I live fluidly as the days go by. I think constantly. I sometimes think too much and then feel nervous and confused. It may not happen just to me. To express myself, I draw these emotions that are very personal and sensitive, because these are the only ones I can be absolutely certain of. The series Visages represents a hundred emotions that are inside of me and the series Friends, a hundred emotional impressions that I have observed in others, maybe in you…"
Born in Japan and a graduate of the Zokei University of Art and Design, Tomiyuki Sakuta has exhibited and has been awarded prizes nationally and internationally, including in Poland, Bulgaria, China and Thailand. He had a residency at Atelier Circulaire in 2016 and participated in artists’ residencies in China, Sweden, Australia, Finland, the Netherlands and Belgium. His work can be seen in several private and public collections, including the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art in the United States and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Thailand. He lives and works in Tokyo (artist website).
