Sophie Desjardins devotes her artistic practice to intaglio printmaking on copper plates, known as "taille‑douce", working primarily with etching, aquatint, and mezzotint techniques. Her personal visual style and deep connection to the animal world lend her works a signature that is easily recognizable. While remaining true to traditional techniques, she favors a contemporary form of expression.
The animals depicted by Sophie are approached as unique beings, each carrying its own story, distinct personality, and sensitivity. This vision is embodied through the attention she gives to their expressions, attitudes, and the giving of personal names. Through this approach, the artist-printmaker invites viewers to recognize the individuality of each animal and to regard them with empathy.
In this spirit, each artwork offers the opportunity to forge a personal bond, a symbolic relationship with the cat, the fox, the mouse, or any other animal depicted. In return, this animal brings joy, comfort, strength, or inspiration to the person who chooses to welcome it.
Each year, Sophie takes part in several exhibitions in Quebec, elsewhere in Canada, and internationally, thus affirming her commitment to the printmaking community and supporting initiatives that promote its vitality.
