With roots in Irish-Montreal and Québecois culture, I grew up immersed in the storytelling and oral history traditions of both. In 2022, I began to illustrate ‘Patricia’s Stories’ a narrative journey centered on my mother’s self-published memoir Swinging on a Star (2011), developing it into a chronological series. My color silkscreen prints on black paper represent a sequence of real-life events transcribed and illustrated from Patricia’s memoir. The images have been selected from 290 original four-panel pages. My creative process demands experimentation with textures, forms and colors. This is a journey into my imagination based on a lifetime of interaction with my mother’s coming of age memories. I let my pencil do the talking. As a child and her audience, I imagined what life was like for her growing up unhoused with three little brothers and their single mother in Maisonneuve, East end Montreal, during the Great Depression and World War II.
